The Independence Public Library is currently seeking applicants for a Library Assistant position.
The Library Assistant will assist children, teens, families and caregivers in the use of library services including online and in-person resources; provide technology assistance with computers, phones, tablets, printers, or other devices; and connect local residents with other resources available within the community. The ideal candidate would be Spanish-English bilingual, have customer service experience, and be comfortable working with a wide range of people.

Brief Description
The Library Assistant is a front-line staff member whose primary duties include providing direct patron service, performing clerical work, and handling some aspects of processing and cataloging items within the library.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Handle all aspects of patron service related to circulation (checking in and out of library materials; assisting patrons with making hold requests; registering new patrons; etc.)
- Assist patrons with basic reference questions (cursory research; readers advisory; locating resources; etc.)
- Assists with processing library items (applying new labels; applying protective coverings; simple repairs; etc.)
- Shelves library materials and ensures that items on the shelf are in their correct place
- Monitors computer area and local history section
- Provides patrons with basic technology assistance with computers, library resources, printers, scanners, and other tools available through the library.
- Understand all library resources and be able to provide patron assistance with all associated websites, apps, and programs.
- Other duties as assigned
Physical Demands and Requirements
- Frequent lifting of more than 10 pounds
- Pushing and pulling loaded book carts
- Crouching and kneeling near low shelves
- Reaching above eye level – sometimes with use of a stepstool
- Ability to read size 12 font or smaller on item labels
- Ability to use a keyboard and item scanner
